Haul roads are a key consideration for most surface mine sites in the world when seeking to increase productivity and reduce maintenance costs. Poor road conditions impact truck cycle times, unscheduled maintenance and fuel costs making the effectiveness of motor grader operators crucial to a mine site’s bottom line. Immersive Technologies has recently launched the world’s most advanced motor grader simulator allowing for maximum effectiveness and efficiency in the training of motor grader operators. The release of the grader simulator ensures operators are trained at the highest level to produce quality mining roads allowing optimal loads at higher speeds equating to more tons per hour.
Tires represent a significant expense in a mining operation and are a powerful area for cost containment. Maximizing tire life increases machine availability and proactively addresses issues like global tire shortages. Immersive Technologies has worked with major OEMs and mining operations around the globe to deliver a mean 10.4% increase in mining truck tire life using Advanced Equipment Simulator based operator training programs.
Simulation based training will now be part of mining equipment operator workforce development in Saudi Arabia through the largest mining simulation investment in history to be delivered by Immersive Technologies. Ma’aden, the largest mining company in Saudi Arabia, will utilize Immersive Technologies simulators to address one of the biggest challenges faced by the Kingdom - developing a skilled workforce to support the expansion of mining.

The level of realism of shovel operator training simulators has reached a new heights directly resulting in increased operator training effectiveness, safety and productivity. Immersive Technologies has released VirtualGround™ 3.0 as part of the launch of their Cat® 7495 Rope Shovel simulator which takes digging and other shovel related tasks to the highest available level of fidelity. Further operator assessment through Immersive Technologies’ Global Operator Benchmarking System (GOBS) has also been extended to include Electric Rope Shovels.
Leading USA coal mining company, Alpha Natural Resources, has chosen Immersive Technologies to supply an Advanced Equipment Simulator for underground continuous miner operator training. This marks an important milestone in the underground coal industry as simulation training at this level has not previously been available. Alpha plans to integrate the simulation technology into their Running Right Leadership Academy. This $18 million dollar training facility in West Virginia is set to open in June 2013. The facility is approximately 126,000 square feet with a state-of-the-art mine simulation lab for operator training. Running Right is Alpha’s operating philosophy, based on employee engagement and continuous improvement.
Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd (HCM) has renewed its exclusive partnership agreement with Immersive Technologies for a further five year period. This partnership aims to cultivate this mutual relationship for the benefit of the two company’s mutual customers.
In recent years the demand for dozer operators working on coal stockpiles has grown dramatically, increasing the need for specialized training in what is considered one of the most hazardous environments for dozer operators. Committed to making mine sites safer, Immersive Technologies has developed technology to specifically address operator safety in coal stockpiling. This technology is embedded in an upgrade to Immersive Technologies’ leading range of Advanced Equipment Simulators.
Cliffs Natural Resources has received Immersive Technologies’ 2012 Business Improvement Award for outstanding results in mining operator training. Cliffs was selected based on the measurable results attributed to their ‘Haul Truck Cycle Time’ continuous improvement project as well as their continued strategic focus on operator safety and ability to achieve results throughout numerous mine sites.
Immersive Technologies has partnered with Australian-based Downer to launch a fuel efficiency technology aimed at giving mine management an affordable way to address the challenges of rising fuel costs and environmental responsibility. This technology is embedded in an upgrade to Immersive Technologies’ leading range of Advanced Equipment Simulators. It is designed to give mining equipment operators the skills and knowledge they need to operate in a productive manner while assessing and eliminating behaviors that cause excess fuel consumption.
Leading Russian underground mining company, Norilsk Nickel, has chosen Immersive Technologies to provide a simulator training solution for their underground equipment operators. Consisting of a UG360-B base Advanced Equipment Simulator, Caterpillar® underground loader machine module and supporting services to integrate the training solution.
Gibraltar Mine, the second largest open pit copper mine in Canada and largest employer in the Cariboo region has bolstered their operator training with the inclusion of Advanced Equipment Simulators from market leader Immersive Technologies.
Federal funding of more than $1.7 million will allow the College of the Rockies to acquire haul-truck training simulators which will train entry-level workers in the mining sector. A total of five simulators will be purchased and used for training at several of the College's campuses. Compared to training on an actual machine, simulation-based training allows students to engage in maneuvers or operational situations that may be dangerous to perform.
First Quantum Minerals (FQML) understands the importance of having properly trained operators which is why they further invested in Immersive Technologies’ operator training solutions for the Sentinel mine and smelter project, part of the Trident Project in Zambia.
