ResCo Service's new indigenous trainee simulator program saw its first 10 students graduate in May 2012. The graduates now have the opportunity to continue into ResCo's Certificate II in a surface extraction operation traineeship or seek direct employment in the mining industry.

The four week traineeship based at Coal and Allied's Mount Thorley operation uses a state-of-the-art PRO3 virtual training simulator to train recruits in the use of common machinery at mine sites.

According to Chief Operating Officer, Jason Sweeney, the program is the first of its kind to incorporate a PRO3 simulator with an interactive classroom.

ResCo Services National Training Manager, Darren Culley, said the course was very comprehensive and great entry level training for mine sites. Both new developments highlight Immersive Technologies' ongoing approach to investing in mining simulation with a focus on driving customer safety and profitability with their industry leading technology together with extensive mining experience.

"All the recruits see firsthand into the minesite so they know how it's done, then replicate it in the safe environment of the simulator,"said Mr. Culley.

"The recruits are tested to a global standard and these guys have reached the benchmark." From this program 40 indigenous job seekers will be trained for full-time employment opportunities in the mining industry.

The program is partnered by Mission Australia Employment Solutions which has aided in recommending potential recruits for the course.

"Programs such these are important because they are working towards filling the skill shortages faced in the mining and resource sector whilst providing training needed for indigenous job seekers," said General Manager NSW/ACT Employment Solutions, Mission Australia Jodie Gilliland.

Graduate Kirra Campbell said she loved the course and can definitely see herself pursuing a career in the mining industry. "I'm really excited and have more confidence to get into the real trucks now and transfer the skills I've learnt over the past four weeks."

The Indigenous Simulator Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and will be launched in North Queensland in July.
